5 Quick Ways to Beat Sleeplessness Naturally

5 Quick Ways to Beat Sleeplessness Naturally

We've all gone through periods of time when we're just not sleeping well. It can be caused by many things like stress and poor diet, and sometimes we even need a little extra nudge to fall back into restful sleep.

Instead of turning to an over-the-counter medicine that comes with the possibility of negative side effects and even dependency, try these 5 quick and easy ways to help you beat sleeplessness naturally.

Magic Sleepy Dust

Thanks to Butter Believer for this little miracle. We found this trick a while ago, and it's certainly one that we always keep on our side tables at night. It really works!

Ingredients

Mix everything together in a small container, and keep by your bedside.

To use, scoop out a little bit with a spoon and let it dissolve under your tongue, or just wet a finger, dip it in and lick it off (that's what we do). Just a tiny amount will do the trick.

Bed Linen Spray

A little spray of heavenly lavender on your bed linen really sets the tone for a better night's sleep. I spray just a bit on my sheets and blankets in the morning as I make the bed, and it's the perfect amount of sleepy time aroma when I'm ready to hit the sack that night.

Ingredients

Pour water and lavender oil into a 4oz or larger spray bottle and shake gently to mix.

Shake before using, and spray as much as you'd like on your sheets, blankets or pillows any time during the day or night.

Sleepytime Foot Spray

Wellness Mama has a wonderful DIY foot spray that contains essential oils and magnesium to address sleeplessness. We played around with it a bit and found that the addition of bergamot essential oil helps to reduce anxiety, blood pressure and pulse when combined with lavender (read more about it in this study).

Ingredients

Pour all ingredients into a 4oz or larger spray bottle and shake gently to mix.

Just spritz a little on your feet before bed or as needed for waking sleeplessness.

Essential Oil Reed Diffuser

Keeping a reed diffuser in your bedroom all the time creates a constant presence of beneficial aromas that promote sleep.

Ingredients

Combine oils in your glass jar and insert the reeds. The oils will travel up the reeds and diffuse into the air in just a couple of hours.

TIP: Flip your reeds a couple times a week to refresh the scent in your room.

You can also buy pre-made essential oil reed diffuser Whiff Sticks made by Zum.

Peaceful Mama Tea

Earth Mama Angel Baby's founder, a nurse and herbalist, formulated organic Peaceful Mama Tea especially for pregnant mamas who were having difficulty with anxiety and sleeplessness, but it just so happens to be perfectly safe and effective for everyone in the whole family.

Its tension-easing herbs like Lemon Balm, calcium rich Oat Straw, calming Chamomile, Red Raspberry Leaf and Orange Peel can help relieve stress, insomnia, and even headaches.

A BONUS REMEDY: We were also recently introduced to Natural Vitality's Natural Calm magnesium supplement at the ShiftCon Eco Blogging Conference and found it very helpful in relaxing enough to allow sleep to come more easily.
