We're always looking for simple, healthy drink recipes for the cold winter months, and after reading the icky ingredients on our can of hot cocoa mix, we decided we could surely do better than this:

Nestle's Rich Milk Chocolate Hot Cocoa Mix: sugar, corn syrup solids, hydrogenated vegetable oil, dairy product solids, cocoa, calcium carbonate, salt, cellulose gum, sodium caseinate, dipotassium phosphate, sodium aluminosilicate, mono- and diglycerides, guar gum, non-fat milk, artificial flavor, sucralose.

We got busy in the kitchen playing around with ingredients we trust and formulated our very own healthy, low sugar Mexican hot cocoa mix without problematic no-calorie sweeteners like sucralose (Splenda).

The Simplest Way to Make Your Own Low Sugar Mexican Hot Cocoa Mix

Let me tell you, these real food ingredients taste SO much better than the old canned stuff!

Ingredients

3 cups whole milk powder (all the organic milk powders we've found are non-fat, so if you choose to use one of them, we recommend adding a little organic coconut oil to the prepared cocoa to boost the healthy fat and nutrition content)
1 ½ cups Swerve Confectioner's sweetener
⅓ cups Golden Monkfruit powder
½ cup + 1 Tbsp organic cocoa powder
¾ cup white chocolate chips
¾ cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
¼ tsp sea salt
1 ½ tsp cornstarch
¼ tsp cayenne pepper

Directions

Mix all ingredients in large bowl. Stir well. Run all ingredients together in food processor. Store in airtight container in a cool area.

To serve: Add ⅓ cup of mix to mug and stir in 8 oz of boiling water.

    My kids were gifted hot chocolate last year but I balked at the ingredient list! I bought some straight up cocoa powder instead and made my own with milk and a little sugar. Who needs all that junk? This recipe looks extremely giftable!

    Love that you used monk fruit powder. Why are do use both swerve and monk fruit powder?

      We’re really enjoying monk fruit! We use both because it gives a more balanced kind of sweet.
