Natural Prevention & Treatment of Pesticide Resistant Head Lice

Natural Prevention & Treatment of Pesticide Resistant Head LiceConventional lice shampoos and other pesticide-rich treatments have given rise to super lice. Like super bugs, these pesticide resistant head lice have become largely immune to standard treatments like permethrin, causing more pervasive and harder to treat infestations that affect up to 12 million kids every year.

In 25 states, recent outbreaks of head lice treated with insecticidal shampoo have been met with little success leaving many people clamoring for effective alternative treatments. And with the general public awakening to the dangers of toxins, especially pesticides, non-toxic alternative treatments are of the highest priority.

Head Lice Prevention

If you get word of lice at your local school, be proactive and get yourself a nit-removal comb to start checking your kids hair regularly.

An easy way to prevent head lice in the first place is to treat the hair with tea tree oil which is an effective and natural insecticidal repellent, and non-toxic in its diluted form.

Tea tree oil can also be added to shampoo for the same effect.

Or you can purchase a bottle of natural tea tree oil shampoo if you prefer, but the effects may not be as potent.

NOTE: Substitute organic lavender essential oil for children under 2 years old.

Natural Head Lice Treatment

The first line of defense against head lice is delousing, the manual removal of lice eggs using a nit-removal comb. It can be a long process, but it prevents a small case of lice from becoming an all out infestation by eliminating the bug's ability to reproduce effectively.

Remove nits multiple times throughout the treatment process to achieve full effectiveness.

Vacuuming surface areas can also be helpful in keeping lice populations to a minimum, but there's no use in vacuuming every nook and cranny in the house since lice are blood-suckers and will not live in areas without a food source.

Next in the line-up is a full hair treatment using coconut oil, tea tree oil, castile soap and apple cider vinegar. All of these ingredients have been specifically chosen for their ability to safely and effectively kill and repel insects.

Ingredients

Directions

  1. Mix liquid (slightly warm) coconut oil and tea tree oil together, apply to hair thoroughly saturating hair and scalp. Double the ingredients for long hair.
  2. Cover hair with towel or shower cap and leave on for 2 hours.
  3. Rinse hair well (some oil will remain) and shampoo thoroughly with castile soap. Rinse.
  4. Saturate hair and scalp with apple cider vinegar and leave on for at least 10 minutes.
  5. Lightly rinse and repeat daily until problem is resolved.

NOTE: Following up with a thorough delousing is highly recommended.  And be sure to visit Home Remedies for Life for a great list of other natural head lice treatments as well.
