I had the opportunity to try a new product from one of our favorite companies, Ceramcor. They're the makers of the Xtrema line of cookware and bakeware. They also have an incredible line of non-toxic teaware, glassware and Fridgex food storage containers.
They generously sent the new 10″ open skillet for my review, and I was more than happy to try this bad boy out!
It's a beautiful black glossy skillet, quite heavy, but clearly high quality. I gave this thing a run for it's money, and it performed very, very well overall.
Pros and Cons of Using Non-Teflon Cookware
My first question was about its stick-to-itiveness. Would my eggs slide around like a teflon pan, or would they stick and hold on like rust to a nail? Well, it turned out to be something in the middle. I definitely needed a greaser-upper. You know, some kind of fat or butter. And honestly, there's just nothing that compares to teflon and its ability to keep things from sticking, but this skillet FAR outperforms any other non-teflon pan out there. It required less fat than my other non-teflon pans, and once I added that step my foods cooked so nicely.
I'm also a huge fan of pans that go from the stovetop to the oven. It's actually a necessity for me, and this skillet turned out to be my dream come true. And yes, I can do that with my cast iron skillet, but my food doesn't always come out the way I want it to. With the Xtrema skillet, I made my all-time favorite frittatas over and over again because they cooked perfectly in this pan.
Once I got the hang of it, I ended up using this skillet at least once every day. It's crazy versatile, and I'm finding it appropriate for almost everything, even pulled pork. Yummmm!
There are only a few drawbacks that I can see. It's somewhat heavy, but I have a hard time hating that because it equals quality in this case. And secondly, I do wish it had a lid. I could've used it quite a bit, but that's not the end of the world.
Lastly is the cost. This pan is $109.99 which is very pricey for my budget, BUT after having used it for about a month now and having also purchased many, many other non-toxic pans in the past, I truly believe the price is worth it. If I compared the cost of all the cheap, crappy pans I've bought over a few years to the price of this one multi-tasking pan that would last much longer, I'd actually be saving money in the long run. Now how can you beat that??
Overall, the non-toxic aspects of this pan outweigh my desire for a completely non-stick surface by leaps and bounds, and the drawbacks are also minute in the grand scheme of things. There's no doubt that I'm Xtremely in love with this skillet 🙂
