How's your natural deodorant working? If you're washing your armpits each morning before applying and it's still not quite getting the job done, it may well be that you need to detox your armpits. Yep, you heard that right!
Why You Need to Detox Your Armpits
There's been a lot of progress on the deodorant front over the last several years. More and more people are realizing just how bad conventional deodorant is for the body with potential negative health effects including endocrine disruption, fatigue, weakness, rapid heart rate and edema (swelling). Not to mention the common ingredient aluminum which is highly toxic and detrimental to our long-term health causing potentially serious neurological side effects. YIKES!
Recently, we set out to find the best non-toxic deodorants on the market, and we gathered a big list of great options! But one thing we keep hearing is that folks just can't get their natural deodorants to work well enough, and sometimes experience an uncomfortable rash or an uptick in sweating and smell during the transition from a chemical-based deodorant to a natural one. The problem is that what we think of as “working” is really the effects of a handful of toxic ingredients that cause the body to stop sweating which is totally unnatural and super unhealthy (the body needs sweat to expel toxins, y'all!). So that got us thinking about what could be done to ease the transition and mitigate the dreaded underarm stench, and the most effective answer we found is the armpit detox. It's almost like the underarm needs a withdrawal period to get things functioning properly again after being stopped up for so long, and here's how you do it.
3 Steps to Detoxing Your Armpits
Each ingredient in our pit mask is selected specifically for its beneficial drawing and conditioning characteristics. We’ve found this 3-step combination to be an effective way of transitioning to natural deodorant while restoring the health of your underarms.
1. Stay fully hydrated to help flush the armpit lymph nodes and underarm skin. Most adults do well with 64 ounces of water every day.
2. Limit your intake of alcohol and caffeine, and processed, fatty and sugary foods that can cause the body to excrete strong odors. Strong smelling foods like garlic and onion may also need to be limited if you notice extra odor after consumption. This step can usually be temporary until you notice an increase in the health of your underarms.
3. Use this bentonite clay armpit mask to directly draw out toxins. Ideally, you'll do this once a day until your armpits appear to be recovering.
- 1 Tbsp bentonite clay
- 1 tsp raw apple cider vinegar
- 1 drop organic essential oil* with drawing properties such as cedarwood, cypress, sage or rosemary
- Splash of water to make a paste
*We always recommend organic essential oils to avoid the presence of pesticides that become concentrated during the extraction process.
P.S. If you're pregnant, please check with your healthcare provider before using essential oils as some aren't recommended during pregnancy.
- Mix the bentonite clay, apple cider vinegar and drop of essential oil in a non-metal bowl with a non-metal utensil (metal can react with the ingredients and cause them to lose effectiveness).
- Add enough water to make a spreadable paste and apply to the underarms.
- Leave on for 5-15 minutes. Start slowly and increase the time you leave the mask in place up to the full 15 minutes. Wipe or wash gently to remove.
NOTE: You'll likely see an increase in redness and irritation as you bring your underarms back to good health. Be gentle with them in the shower and when shaving to minimize discomfort.
Another good tip to get the most out of your natural deodorant is to wash your armpits before every application, even if you don't take a full shower.
